The Great Lakes Academy STNA program prepares the students for entry-level positions as nursing assistants and as candidates for the State of Ohio Nurse Aide Examination.
Nurse Aide Training Program Policies
These Training Policies and are in addition to Personnel Policies of the employing facility or agency. Trainees are oriented to these policies during orientation to the NATCEP. A signed copy will be placed in the trainees records, a copy of which will be signed by, and provided to the trainee. A. ENROLLMENT 1. Approval - Nursing assistants must be listed on the Ohio Dept of Health’s Nurse Aide Registry in order to work as a Nurse Aide in an Ohio Nursing home. Great Lakes Academy provides a 75 hour ODH Approved Training Program that enables qualified NAs to sit for the Ohio State Written and Competency Exams. Nurse Aides who successfully complete the ODH prescribed training and testing are permitted to use the title of STNA (State Tested and Approved Nurse Aide) and are listed on the State Registry. 2. Re-approval for STNAs - Initial approval is granted to the STNA by the Ohio Registry for a period of 2 years, at which time the STNA is granted re-approval on the Registry if she/he has worked in a nursing home or other long term care setting at least 7.5-8 hrs in the previous 2 years. The Ohio Dept of Health gathers info for Renewal from the employer at the time of the State Survey 3. The purpose of the Great Lakes Academy Nurse Aide Training Program is to prepare eligible trainees to sit for the State written and competency exam, and, when passed, to provide competent and considerate care for our frail, elderly or disabled citizens who live in nursing homes and other long term care settings. 4. Pre Clinical Experience - A minimum of 16 hours of preclinical studies must be completed before the Trainee can provide direct care to residents. Following the initial 16 hours of training, the trainee may only perform those procedures on residents for which she/he has been passed in the lab and clinical setting by the Program Coordinator or the Primary Instructor. 5. Community enrollees - In addition to training Great Lakes Academy enrollees, the Training Program may accept trainees from other facilities or agencies and from the community on a space available basis and providing the enrollment criteria is met. 6. Requirements: Prospective trainees to the Great Lakes Academy NATCEP program will: a) Apply in writing using Great Lakes Academy NATCEP Application Form b) Present a valid driver’s license or other state verifiable photo ID. c) Successfully complete an entrance interview with a member of the Interview team (Program Coordinator, Primary Instructor or Director of Human Resources). d) The Program Coordinator will be responsible for assuring eligibility of prospective trainees if entering from other facilities or the community. e) Complete a Simple Screening Tool for Reading and Number Skills. f) Show evidence of a negative TB PPD or negative chest X-Ray for TB B. REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETION OF THE NATP 1. Completion a) Trainees in the Great Lakes Academy's NATCEP are required to meet ODH criteria for completion of the NATCEP. b) Upon successful completion of the requirements of the NATP, the Trainee will receive the ODH Certificate of completion and will be entitled to apply for the Ohio Written and Competency Testing Program. Successful completion of the Ohio Written and Competency evaluation Testing will result in the trainee being placed on the Ohio NA Registry and allow the NA to work in an Ohio Nursing home or other long term care setting as an STNA. c) Nurse Aide Trainees may not work in a nursing home for more than 4 months during which time she/he must complete all training requirements, pass the State Written and Competency Test and be listed on the Ohio NA Registry. d) Trainees are expected to be active learners and to take the initiative to grow in this class and to adapt the info learned in class to the care setting. You must as an enrollee actively participate in all clinical and training materials presented by the program director in order to pass the trainees program. 2. Incomplete studies - Nursing assistants who have not completed the requirements of the course are not eligible to take the State Competency Tests or to be listed on the Ohio NA Registry. 3. Grading system – Trainees will pass at least three quizzes comprised of 10-15 multiple choice or case study questions and a final exam comprised of at least 50 multiple choice questions. Class room testing may replace some daily quizzes at the discretion of the teacher. The following letter grade applies to numerical scores on tests: a) A - 90% - 100% b) B - 80% - 89% c) C - 74% - 79% In the event a trainee does not achieve a passing grade of 80% or above on an exam, remedial work will be assigned by the instructor and the trainee will be required to retake the failed exam one time. Trainees who do not receive a passing grade on retake of exam may be required to repeat a portion of the course as determined appropriate by the Program Coordinator and Primary Instructor. Repeating any portions of the course will be set at a base rate to be paid by the trainee before certificate can be awarded. 4. Competency or Skills testing will be conducted by the Program Coordinator or the Primary Instructor in Classroom and clinical settings. a) Trainees will begin the first day of calls to develop skill and the ability to perform procedures. b) A Task Detail Check Form is provided to guide Trainees in the performance of a skill and also to determine if the trainee has completed steps of the procedure as instructed. c) Trainees will have some latitude in performing skills as long as they follow the steps of the Procedure as instructed. Critical elements and Order dependent steps must be performed as specified in the task detail. d) After practicing in the lab setting, each trainee may have three separate attempts in which to complete each procedure to specifications. e) Scoring for skills testing is designated as pass or fail. A Skills Completion Log will be maintained for each trainee and will become a part of the Trainee’s Class Records. f) Evaluation of attitude, initiative, work effort, organization and other factors will be discussed jointly between trainee and instructor and a plan will be developed for those areas requiring attention. g) All eligible trainees will sit for the State Exam and Competency Test which may be conducted in their own facility or in another location. Testing is monitored by an approved monitor and all determination of grades will be done by a Testing Company, retained by the ODH for this purpose. h) The Ohio Regulations and Standards will be strictly followed. i) The NATCEP reserves the right to extend the total course time beyond the requirements if this is deemed appropriate to the needs of the Trainees.
C. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS 1. Attendance - Trainees enrolled in the NATP are required to attend all scheduled classes and clinical sessions and to complete all class work. Clinical assignments and make-ups are to be to the satisfaction of the Program Coordinator or Primary Instructor in order for records of completion to be submitted to ODH. 2. Absences cannot be tolerated; this behavior limits the ability of the PI or PC to fairly evaluate the performance of the trainee, and limits the Trainee's ability to provide quality care to residents. This also limits other trainees from performing at maximum passing levels. Absences may result in termination of the trainee from the NATP. Trainees who fail to complete the requirements for the NATP are not be eligible to apply for State Testing nor to be enrolled in the Ohio Nurse Aide Registry and are not eligible to work as an STNA in an Ohio Nursing Home. 3. Tardiness - Late arrivals for classroom or clinical sessions may hinder the learning progress, create delays in class and compromise resident care in clinical setting. Three episodes of tardiness of 10 minutes or more will be treated as a full day absence and will be dealt with in the same manner. Dismissal from the program can and will happen. Since tardiness to the NATP may be an indicator of employment performance, the employer will be notified of repeated tardiness or absences. 4. Makes-ups must be completed and must address all missed content before the end of the course and only with executive permission by the Board shall stated home work be approved in rare and extreme Emergency’s. a) In the event a participant must be absent for any portion of the course, it is the responsibility of the participant to notify the Faculty or Program Administrator. Call 419-872-5343 ask the on call person to connect you to the Program Coordinator or the Primary Instructor. b) Trainees requiring makeup time may be scheduled to complete make-ups in a future class or as determined appropriate by the Program Coordinator or Primary Instructor. c) A fee of $30.00 per hr. shall be charged for all makeup sessions. 5. Remediation - Trainees who fail all or any portion of the NATCEP will be given the option to repeat the portion or the total program at the discretion of the Program Coordinator or Primary Instructor. Every effort will be made to assist the trainee to perform procedures correctly. In the event that the issues requiring remediation are outside of the domain of the NATCEP, the Trainee will be referred to appropriate agencies or other. Remediation is at the discretion of the PC and/or Faculty and will consider factors such as interest, ability and attitude.
